"WOMEN-ONLY CONCERTS. YES, NO, MAYBE."

On September 2nd, 1978 Teddy Pendergrass played a midnight "For Women Only" concert at Avery Fisher Hall in New York to promote his album, "Life Is A Song Worth Singing". It was ladies only in the crowd, and they were treated to white chocolate and lollipops. It proved very popular and more women-only shows were held after that.

26 of the 27 concerts of the "For Women Only" tour sold out. Women would often threw teddy bears and things much more personal on stage as Teddy sang ballads like "Turn Off the Lights" and "Close the Door". Women shrieked “Teddy P!” and “I love you Teddy” as he emerged on the circular stage dressed in a light coloured one-piece jumpsuit with gold chains dangling around his neck. -In case you're wondering, Teddy's male fans protested the reverse discrimination and won their way into L.A., Philadelphia, Chicago and New York.

Not many artists could pull off a "women-only" show as Pendergrass did. In 2008 Usher tried to do it, and announced a "One Night Stand: Ladies Only" tour, but seeing that tickets sales went slow, a Jive spokesperson clarified that although ladies would be the focus, men were welcome at the gigs. In 2012 R. Kelly's "Single Ladies" tour, included a "Ladies Only" section, but male fans were welcome. In 2013 TGT went on their 'Shirts Off' tour. However, Tyrese said: "It's 'for the ladies only', but anyone regardless of gender who's on a retro R&B kick of late is advised to rock up and get down, real slow."

Who could actually pull off a "Women-only" gig? Would it be advisable? I'd dare say no. And if there's one, you won't find me there.
