August 28th, 2009: Noel Gallagher issued a statement on the band's website, saying he was leaving the band.
"It is with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," Noel Gallagher wrote shortly after the cancelled show.
There had been warning signs in previous months of escalating tension. In April, Noel mentioned that he wanted to spend time focusing on his first solo record rather than write the follow-up to the band’s 2008 album, "Dig Out Your Soul". The day he issued his statement, Noel had fought against his brother Liam backstage at the Rock en Seine Festival in Paris before the show they were about to perform, which was cancelled just minutes before it was to begin. According to witnesses, the brothers were arguing fiercely backstage when Liam smashed one of Noel's guitars. Then they started pummeling away at each other.
The band also immediately cancelled upcoming shows in Germany and Italy.
